Stories and What We Learn

The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our country's independence and the sacrifices that have been made to protect our freedom. Here are three stories that illustrate the importance of this holiday:

The Story of Betsy Ross

Betsy Ross is credited with sewing the first American flag. According to legend, she was visited by George Washington, who asked her to create a flag that would represent the new nation. Ross agreed, and she created a flag with 13 stars and 13 stripes, representing the 13 original colonies.

The Story of the Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party was a protest against the British government's taxation of tea. On December 16, 1773, a group of colonists disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians and boarded three British ships that were carrying tea. They dumped the tea into the Boston Harbor, protesting the British government's unfair taxes.

The Story of the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. This document declared the 13 American colonies' independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was a bold act of defiance, and it helped to spark the American Revolutionary War.
